The Netherlands Commission for Unesco will organize a panel discussion about culture-based solutions to local climate adaptation. This online event takes place with the support of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management in the lead up to the online Climate Adaptation Summit on 25 January 2021. The panel discussion will be moderated by Corinne Hofman, professor of Caribbean Archaeology at Leiden University and Member of the Netherlands Commission for Unesco.
Climate adaptation is often approached as an innovation process, requiring technology investments to support this shift. However, in this event, we present climate adaptation as a human process, requiring cultural resources and a change in mind-set to succeed. It considers the power of culture, heritage and historical knowledge as assets for local climate adaptation strategies.
The program
The program starts with the presentation of four examples from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, illustrating culture-based solutions to local climate adaptation. The presentations are followed by a panel discussion in which the speakers reflect on the role of heritage and culture as drivers for climate adaptation action.

- Amsterdam Wetlands – Landschap Noord-Holland
- Cultural knowledge systems and climate adaptation on Bonaire – Fuhikubo
